A Royal Red Pillar
I followed the gentle slope of the pavement stones toward the corner where Birmingham's red pillar postbox stood tall against the afternoon bustle. Its cast-iron surface was cold and reassuringly sturdy. Sheltered at its rounded base sat a discarded striped paper sweet bag, dry and rustling softly in the pavement draft. I leaned my shoulder into its folded bottom, carefully opening the crease until it formed a tidy little windbreak against the iron pedestal. Resting one hand on the heavy red paint, I watched passers-by hurry past with letters and parcels, feeling quietly anchored right beside the rhythm of their day.
