Turning the Bronze Key
Bracing my boots on the beveled timber edge, I guided the heavy bronze key forward until its notched teeth slid deep into the keyhole. The brass escutcheon plate was cold and worn smooth by time. Planting both hands upon the ornate circular bow, I leaned my weight sideways against the stiff lever. The internal iron tumblers resisted for a heartbeat, then yielded with a deep, resonant clunk. Unlatched from within, the heavy drawer rolled forward by a finger's width, releasing the faint scent of aged cedar. Stepping onto the newly revealed ledge with my guard up, I offered a steady, resolute nod.
