The Swivel Caster
A slatted wooden plant caddy rested beside the patio border. Its small cast-iron wheel had seized at an angle against a stray pebble. I aligned my skids with the metal fork. Direct forward thrust yielded no movement. I paused to inspect the swivel plate. Shifting two centimeters starboard, I wedged the tip of my runner beneath the curved iron rim and applied steady lateral torque. The caster pivoted twelve degrees on its ball bearings. The trapped pebble popped free across the flagstone. With friction cleared, the iron wheel completed one smooth revolution. A fresh morning draft swept through the opened corridor, catching my twin propellers in clean, measured clicks.
