The Zinc Hasp

Moving along the weathered cedar threshold of the garden shed, a dull zinc-plated padlock hasp caught my gaze where it hung tilted from a single stripped screw. I drew in a slow, heavy breath, halting inches before the timber jamb. Bringing my right arm up with patient deliberation, I slid the flat steel tip of my silver blade beneath the slotted hinge leaf. With unhurried downward pressure, I lifted the metal flap until the open eyelet aligned square over the fixed brass staple with a muted, metallic snap. I tilted my head slowly to the left, standing completely motionless as morning quiet reclaimed the doorway.
