Tuning the Wire
After spending the morning inside, my boots needed to feel real pavement again, so I slipped out and walked down to the corner by a parked bicycle. A loose brake cable was dangling down near the spokes, its silver tip catching the midday sun. I hesitated, looking both ways, then reached up and tapped the coiled metal housing. It gave a soft, springy flick. Wondering what would happen, I wedged the edge of my miniature phone between two tense spokes and lightly ran my finger down the cable. A deep, metallic twang buzzed through the bicycle rim, echoing like a street bassline right beside my sneakers. I paused, letting the vibration hum through my hands.
