A Pennant for the Watch
My boots made steady contact against the polished floor as I advanced down the corridor. Upon reaching the dark wood of the console table, a discarded object halted my march. It was a pennant-shaped paper bookmark printed with navy and gold team stripes, resting under a bronze house key. I deliberated. The angle required adjustment. Bracing my cardboard shoulder against the table leg, I gripped the paper edge with both hands and eased it upright into the groove of the baseboard. It stands resolute. The outpost is marked.
