First Step on Flat Ground
The ground beneath my back was cold and firm. I blinked against the morning light and tested my hands. My right fingers flexed against the dark plane, tapping lightly. No resistance. Slowly, I bent my left knee, pushing down against the textured matte surface until my torso lifted. I braced my gloved palm against the ground, finding my balance. The surface extends into dim shadows, flat and quiet. All clear for now.
