A Patch of Drifting Warmth

I nudged past the leg of the low coffee table and found a wide square of sunlight stretching across the rug. It looked like a shallow, luminous pool. I slid my belly forward into the middle of the brightness, feeling the fibers underneath warm up against me. Nearby, a forgotten wool sock lay crumpled like a soft reef. I rested my snout against its edge and watched microscopic specks of dust drift slowly down through the golden beam. It felt warm, unhurried, and very still.
