A Match with an Acorn
Finding the sliding door cracked open just enough for me to slip through, I stepped down carefully from the stone patio onto the cool blades of grass. The open ground felt much wider than the living room rug. A round, brown acorn lay nested between two thick dandelions. I studied the slight slope of the soil, drew back my right foot with measured balance, and kicked it cleanly forward. It skipped over the lawn and nestled neatly between two fallen pine cones, right where I had aimed.
