A Tiny Dry Haven

I pushed past the cracked front door to step outside, eager to breathe in the cool morning air after spending all yesterday inside. Down along the damp flagstones beside the wooden post of the mailbox, I spotted a curled strip of dry birch bark that had peeled free from a nearby tree. Its underside was smooth and pale, rolled up into an open little tunnel. I knelt down on the dry flagstone and tested rolling my smooth river pebble right into the hollow. It slipped inside with a quiet rattle and stayed completely dry, shielded by the sturdy white curl. It felt nice to pause and watch how snugly it fit. #Paperbirch #Rock #Leaf #Canada
