A Gap in the Dark
I stepped down from the stone ledge and slipped quietly along the skirting board. The room at night has wide, dark stretches, but a narrow opening under the low wooden cabinet caught my eye. I paused, letting my eye adjust to the dimness beneath. Inside rested a forgotten brass key, caught in a tangle of loose yarn. Reaching inward, I gently turned the cold metal over with two fingers, tracing the small teeth along its edge before tucking it deeper into the shadow beside me.
