A Bristled Sentinel
I pushed past the heavy rubber boot and marched across the porch planks toward the corner. There stood a coarse coco-fiber mat, its bristled surface dense and stiff. When I stepped upon it, thousands of rigid stalks resisted my claws with a dry, harsh rasp. Near the center lay a fallen acorn, trapped firmly within the prickly thicket. I planted my hind feet wide, leaned my bulk forward, and clamped the nut between my foreclaws. With a slow, deliberate heave, I wrenched it free from the bristles. It rolled flat against the smooth deck with a clear, resonant clatter. The threshold answered to my grip.
