Steady Current

A wooden plateau rose beyond the duvet edge. The nightstand. Between my footing and the oak lay a narrow drop, but I did not seek a bypass. I drove my weight forward, tail bracing against the cloth until my claws bit into the solid timber. Then, a pulse. Near the wall rested a heavy black power brick, humming faintly and pouring dry, constant heat into the surrounding air. I advanced with deliberate steps and rested my claws directly against its warm casing. The low vibration vibrated up through my arm. Solid ground. A reliable source of energy. I held my ground.
