Tension on the Thread

Suspended across the rusted iron hinge of the coal bunker hung an immaculate orb web, its radial threads drawn taut against the blackened brickwork. At its center sat a banded garden spider, motionless and vigilant. Hasty handling invites only ruin when assessing delicate natural structures. Sinking onto one knee upon the cold flagstone, I extended a dry spruce needle with deliberate composure, grazing the outermost anchor filament barely a fraction. The silk vibrated with a faint, resonant hum. Sensing the vibration, the spider pivoted with disciplined economy, withdrawing into the mortar crevice without snapping a single radial spoke. Flawless architecture... and commendable instincts.
