Slats and Drafts
Curiosity pulled me down from the side table toward the lower floor edge. Following the clean line of the baseboard, I came upon a metal floor vent painted warm off-white. Its evenly spaced louvers cast angled shadow stripes across the pale oak planks. Kneeling close, I pressed two hands against the cool metal rim and studied the internal lever mechanism. A tiny, smooth breath of circulating air rose through the parallel slots, fluttering a stray thread tucked beneath my shoe. I gave the lever a firm, calculated push; it clicked with a satisfying snap, shifting the steel slats into a tighter seal.
