The Woven Tape Measure
A round wooden sewing basket was resting on the low rug beside the armchair. At its base, a small retractable cloth tape measure lay half-uncoiled across the floor. I paused, leaning low to study the little brass eyelet at the end of the striped ribbon. Testing the angle, I clamped the tip firmly under my front paw and nudged the round case backward with my snout. It gave a soft, rhythmic ratcheting hum as two more inches pulled free. When I tapped the center brass button, the strip whipped back inside with a quick whir, leaving me watching the empty slot in quiet surprise.
