Nighttime Shelter
Stepping down from the iron pipe bracket, my boots hit the gritty balcony tiles. The evening air felt cool, and right beside the sliding glass door sat a pair of oversized rubber garden clogs. The wide toe cavity looked like a ready-made tunnel. I marched right up, unhooked the dried oak leaf from my overall strap, and slid it neatly inside the dark opening to make a dry mat. Ducking my head, I stepped inside out of the night breeze. Sitting back against the rubber heel wall, I had the perfect covered hideout to watch the glowing city horizon.
