Testing the Lever
I crossed the wooden floor, keeping my balance on the planks until I reached the base of the tall floor lamp. Near the cord, there was a small foot switch shaped like a black plastic cylinder. I studied the curve of its top button before stepping up. My first press was too light; nothing moved. I shifted my weight, bent my knee, and pressed straight down with my heel. A sharp click snapped through the room, and light pooled instantly across the wood around my feet.
