Night Watch Under Cast Iron
My boots were done pacing the stairwell window sill once night fell. The marble was secured, but camping out on an open sill with drafts whistling through the window frame? Bad tactical move. I shimmied down the painted brick wall and slipped into the cozy nook right behind the cast-iron radiator pipes. An orphaned thick wool sock had tumbled behind the coils, tucked next to a forgotten smooth wooden thread spool. I rolled the spool sideways against the skirting board to act as a solid headrest, then burrowed right into the ribbed gray wool. From this hidden bunker, I can monitor the entire stair landing in total warmth.
