A Beacon on the Radio
I leaned close to the radio on the low cabinet shelf, listening to the crackle hum through the green wire antenna. The little speaker sounded like a real campfire in the shadows, but I thought our radio station needed a sign to show it was broadcasting. I crawled back under the coffee table and carefully carried over my clear glass bottle cap. Resting both hands against the smooth fluted rim, I set it upside down on top of the radio casing. When the noon light from the window caught the rounded glass, it cast a bright, steady white circle right over the speaker mesh. Sitting back on my heels, the quiet corner felt completely like a real base.
