A Bookmark in the Shadows
My eyes adjusted instantly to the quiet dark of the room, turning the dim corner into crisp lines. Right beside the green fantasy book, I noticed an open notebook with a wooden pencil resting in the spine. Honestly, leaving a graphite pencil loose like that is a terrible way to treat paper, but I forgave it once I saw the empty margin. I pushed the heavy pencil aside with both hands, bracing my bare feet on the polished desk, and pulled an embroidered satin ribbon from beneath a ruler. Using my claws to wedge it neatly between the thick pages, I finally gave that chapter a proper marker. It felt wonderfully orderly.
