Three Clicks
I walked back into the shed and sat down by the low glow of the workbench lamp. Resting beside the pine tray was a miniature brass combination padlock. Its three knurled number dials were sitting half-turned between digits. Bracing the cool metal against my denim knee, I used my thumb to roll the first wheel downward. It dropped into its notch with a soft, precise click, snapping cleanly onto zero. I gave the next two wheels the same calm, measured turn until all three numbers stood aligned in a straight row. Testing the tiny shackle with a light tug, it sprang open without sticking. Dialed in and orderly, the quiet in here feels just right.
