Taming the Iron Clamp
The morning breeze on the exterior sill was sharp, but sitting still? Never the plan! Right beside the ledge, a weathered copper drainpipe ran straight down toward the street, anchored to the rough brickwork by a heavy iron bracket. I stepped across the narrow gap, tapped the metal with one knuckle, and gripped the pipe bracket with both hands. Right inside the clamp was a forgotten, rusted hose clamp with a slotted tightening screw. Perfect mechanism! I grabbed a flat zinc washer stuck in the mortar seam, slotted its edge into the screw head, and gave a sharp, deliberate twist. Click! The rusted ring loosened just enough to thread a loose loop of twine through. Sturdy anchor point: established!
