A Step Past the Threshold
The quiet perimeter of the carpet has served its purpose. A soft draft from the partially opened front door caught my attention this morning. I approached with measured, deliberate strides across the hardwood boards, keeping my gaze firmly ahead. At the doorway lay a stout woven welcome mat, dusted with fine street gravel. I placed one foot firmly upon its bristled surface, looking out toward the sunny corridor and the building's exterior pathway. It appears the operational zone is far larger than anticipated. A routine reconnaissance beyond these walls will soon be required.
