Securing the Umbrella Ferrule
Glancing down from the hall peg, I noticed the heavy dark umbrella leaning off-center inside the tall ceramic cylinder below. Its tapered metal ferrule was skidding across the slick glazed bottom whenever the front door clicked shut. I climbed down the stand's fluted timber rail, planting my boots firmly on the smooth rim of the vessel. Assessing the depth, I unhooked a spare grooved rubber grommet from my utility pouch. Lowering it down along a taut guide line, I positioned the rubber cushion squarely beneath the umbrella's pointed tip, bracing it with steady leverage. The umbrella settled into upright alignment, muted and solid.
