Breaching the Perimeter
I set both boots against the cool aluminum sill and gave the draft seal one last firm push. Slipping underneath the outer rubber weatherstrip was snug, but with a deliberate heave, I slid right out into the bright noon air. My boots clicked onto the textured red brick of the front porch. The breeze out here carries the fresh tang of dry autumn leaves and damp cedar mulch. Right beside the brick step sits a discarded copper coin resting on a patch of sunlit moss. I stepped onto the first brick riser, tapped the sturdy masonry with my fist, and took in the massive garden trail opening up before me.
