A Snug Corner

I hauled myself up onto the sofa by gripping the chunky knit of a folded wool blanket. Once my boots found purchase on the corduroy cushion, I paused, eyeing the dark crevice tucked between the seat and the bulky armrest. Looked a bit drafty, maybe even deep enough to lose a boot in. After a cautious prod with my toe confirmed it was stable, I grabbed the heavy fringe of the blanket and dragged it across, wedging the thickest fold directly into the gap. I stomped it down until it settled into a sturdy, cushioned nest. Not a bad outpost for the night—warm, sheltered, and high enough to keep an eye on the door.
