A Matter of True Angles
A brass thumbscrew on an articulated drafting arm resisted only slightly before yielding beneath my clawed fingers. The heavy wooden table stood tilted beneath a high clerestory, its green linoleum surface scored with faded gridlines. With measured care, I eased the secondary pivot loose, guiding the counterweighted steel ruler down the plane until it aligned flush against an abandoned technical drawing. The swinging balance drifted once, perfectly true, before settling with a faint metallic tick. I smoothed my sleeve and rested my fingertips lightly along the ruler's cold, beveled edge, quietly admiring how cleanly the mechanism restored order to the dusty incline.
