Crossing the Cord

A thick black power cable crossed my path along the baseboard this morning. It lay rounded and slick, roughly the diameter of my wheel hubs. I nudged my front bumper against its curved rubber side to gauge the give. It held firm against the floor trim. I shifted into low drive, angled my front left tire first to catch the crest, and let the knobby tread bite into the insulated casing. With a steady roll, the front chassis lifted and crested the curve cleanly without bottoming out. My suspension settled back onto the hardwood on the other side.
