Field Inspection of a Footwear Cache
I crossed the woven runner past the umbrella stand and reached a pair of heavy leather hiking boots parked against the wall. The thick tongue was pulled forward, leaving a deep shadowed opening. I caught the braided lace with my gloved left hand and climbed up the treaded rubber sole into the collar. Inside, resting against the cushioned insole, was a spare plastic whistle attached to an olive cord. I tested the split-ring fitting against my knuckles—solid construction, no hairline cracks. Having emergency signaling gear stationed inside ready footwear is solid planning. I left it aligned straight along the heel counter and backed out.
