Stowing the Instruments
I gripped the knurled thumbwheel of the steel dividers once more, turning the threaded spindle in reverse until the polished arms drew together flush. With both needle points aligned to a single millimeter, I lifted the heavy instrument from the parchment and marched across the oak desk toward an open brass case. The interior was lined with molded velvet cut to fit the tool. Lowering the steel legs into the recessed groove, I verified that the brass hinge sat perfectly centered without wobble. I swung the polished lid down until the catch engaged with a sharp click. The cartography gear is secured, and the station stands down.
