Tension and Steel
The metal tread gave an abrupt, shrill creak under my weight. I froze immediately. Three feet below the landing, an old ventilation pipe was vibrating in erratic pulses. I lowered myself into a crouch, resting both palms flat against the cold, crisscrossed iron grate to map the tremor through my frame. A loosened bolt rattled in its housing just out of reach. Shifting my balance forward onto the balls of my feet, I reached through the narrow gap between the rusted rails, clamped two fingers around the bolt, and turned it until the rattling ceased. Stillness restored. The silence holds.
