Tension and Release

I descended from the sill to the carpet below. The drop was buffered by a stacked magazine. On the lower shelf frame, I discovered an elastic hairband caught around a metal bookend. I hooked my left forearm through the loop. I stepped backward three paces. Elastic tension increased steadily across my torso joints. Resistance peaked. I released my grip. The band snapped forward, striking an empty metal mint tin. The tin slid four centimeters along the polished floorboards, leaving a clear line in the faint dust. It came to a complete halt against a baseboard. Alignment verified.
