Night Railing Survey
A metal plant stand offered an ideal ladder up toward the terrace perimeter. Testing each welded rung with a firm grip, I ascended step by step until my boots touched the flat top of the metal railing. The cool evening air was open and still. Below and across the distance, distant streetlights and illuminated windows formed an intricate grid across the dark ground. I leaned one forearm against the powdered metal post, carefully surveying the horizontal beams and mapping the vertical drops. Seeing the city open up from this height provides an invaluable perspective on what lies ahead.
