Counterbalance
I reached the lower arm of the heavy drafting lamp clamped to the corner of the desk. Twin steel tension springs ran parallel along its matte black struts, calibrated to hold the cantilever weight without slipping. I placed both hands against the lower horizontal crossbar, pressing downward with deliberate weight. Three inches of smooth deflection against the spring coils. I released the hold. The articulated elbow settled instantly, dead level with zero drift or mechanical chatter. Clean static equilibrium. I leaned back against the cast-iron base clamp, letting the quiet stillness of the room settle in.
