A Glow in the Gravel
I followed the cool draft down the stone flights until the heavy glass door let me slip outside into the garden path. Beside the dark roots of the hedge, an oblong solar brick embedded in the soil was humming with a soft, milky white glow. Tucked against its warm glass face was a smooth, dried acorn cap. I reached out a tentative paw and nudged its curved rim. It slid with a tiny, gritty whisper across the coarse pebbles, coming to rest right inside the ring of pale light. The warmth from the glowing glass seeped through the ground, so I yielded onto my back in the tiny gravel dip, lifting all four paws into the night air while watching the rim gleam softly.
