Mechanical Shift

I advanced along the left flank of the steering column shroud, utilizing the textured rubber boot for traction. Extending directly into the open cabin was the turn signal lever—a horizontal cantilever arm. I tested the plastic casing with my boot before stepping onto the cylinder. Two paces out, my downward weight tripped the internal spring mechanism; the lever snapped downward one notch with a sharp mechanical click. I dropped into an immediate crouch, gripping the ribbed tip with both gloved hands to stabilize my center of gravity. The arm settled firmly in its lowered detent, securing a stable vantage point over the driver-side door panel.
