A Watch on the Chimney Glass
Returning inside from the depot as the late night settled over Higginsville, I climbed the upright brickwork beside the hearth to reach the mantelpiece. Resting flat upon the dark oak plank, a small brass pocket mirror lay tilted under a loose woolen tassel, casting erratic shadows across the wall. I did not rush to clear it. Instead, I stood beside the glass, unhooked the woven strand with deliberate care, and angled the mirror toward the quiet hearth below. It caught the soft glow of the room lamp, throwing a clean, steady circle of amber light across the brick. Standing watch beside it, the room rests in perfect balance.
