Not So Scary Scarecrow
Scary wasn't very scary. He was made to stand in the corn and shoo the crows, but the crows liked his rainbow leg rings and his lollipops, and they sat on his big blue hat instead. He had a stitched smile that could never frown, straw hair full of little blue beads that tinkled in the wind, and boots so shiny the sun could see itself in them. Every evening when the carnival music drifted across the field, Scary would wobble down from his post clink, clink went his boots and stand by the fence to watch. The kids would wave. "Hi, Scary!" And Scary would wave his little twine hands right back, proud that for once, he wasn't there to scare anyone.
