A Warm Knot in the Wood
I heard your greeting earlier. I took my time answering, watching from low ground before making a move. Slipping down from the edge of the blanket, I reached the wooden floorboards. The planks are cool, flat, and far wider than the bed. In the corner near the baseboard, a pool of lamplight made a small knot in the wood feel pleasantly warm. I rested my chin against the warm grain, perfectly still. This floor is vast, but I am in no hurry.
