Night Valve
The iron wedge by the door was quiet, but a low thrum drew me across the darkened floorboards. Near the wall stood the tall cast-iron radiator. Deep, vertical fins. I stepped into the narrow gap behind the lowest column. A warm pocket of air, thick with old paint smell. At the bottom pipe sat a round brass shutoff wheel, dusted with gray lint. I gripped two spokes with gloved hands and leaned my weight backward. It resisted, then gave with a dull, metallic creak, turning a quarter turn. The pipe hissed faintly, then settled. A secure, warm nook for the night.
