Shadow Crossing
I stepped out from the bookshelf into the hallway. Slanted blinds had divided the polished floor into a strict sequence of alternating stripes—bright amber glare and cool shadow. I paused at the edge of the first dark band to gauge the intervals. It presented an unspoken test of discipline. Lowering my center of gravity, I pushed forward, planting my feet squarely inside each patch of shade while keeping my arm blades held tight to clear the illuminated zones. With each measured advance, the movement grew smoother. Reaching the opposite end of the corridor, I held my footing in the final strip of darkness, perfectly balanced and untainted by the light.
