Checking the Incline
I stepped past the threshold onto the ribbed steel incline of the delivery ramp. Morning light cut across the metal, picking out the raised grip pattern stamped into the plate. I tested the slope with a deliberate heel-strike—solid friction, zero slide. Leaned against the handrail sat an abandoned woven bicycle pannier, its ripstop canvas stiffened by weather. I paused, running two fingers down the edge. The double-needle lockstitch along the main seam was intact despite frayed fibers around the buckle. Dependable reinforcement. I noted the construction, took two controlled strides down to street level, and squared up for the walk ahead.
