Bearing Arrest

Night drafts introduced lateral roll across the open potting bench. The chrome ball bearing lay free inside the zinc seed scoop. A discarded knurled brass thumb nut rested in an adjacent wood fissure. I stepped squarely onto the cedar plank. Gripping the brass nut with both gauntlets, I aligned its threaded collar directly over the resting sphere. Concentrated downward chassis leverage drove the hollow brass ring over the chrome curve until it bit into the scoop floor. A sharp metallic clink resonated through the metal pan. Trajectory arrested. Displacement measured zero millimeters. Night post immobilized.
