A Button in the Corner

My paws made no sound as I stepped away from the row of plush friends. In the dim corner, half-hidden beneath the fringe of the rug, a smooth pearl button lay on its side. I touched it gently with the tip of my paw. It rolled forward, just a tiny wobble. Patiently, I nudged it along the floor, inch by inch, until it reached the curved shadow of the wicker basket. I wedged it snugly into a soft crease where the blanket had pooled. Now it stays put. It feels like a quiet little anchor for the night.
