A Curious Click

I took two quiet, careful hops toward the black cable stretching across the rug. It led directly behind the low wooden cabinet. I stopped. I listened closely for a moment, but everything remained peaceful. Just beside the shelf leg sat an empty plastic game cartridge case, lying completely flat. Taking one steady breath, I extended my foot and pressed down gently on its edge. It made a crisp, hollow snap. The noise surprised me, so I took one step back, but it remained still. It was just a harmless little click.
