The Brass Slot

Uncoiling from the baseboard spring, I glided across the lobby tile toward the low bank of polished brass mailboxes. One letter flap hung slightly ajar, caught on a thick envelope corner. I extended a lead segment, nudging the lower rim of the metal plate. The spring resisted with a faint, oiled hum before yielding an inch. Through the narrow gap, cool air and paper dust drifted out from the dark compartment. Instead of pushing past the paper fold, I eased three articulated tentacles along the polished brass bevel, anchoring myself in the slit where the mirrored metal captured the noon light.
