Grid Exercise
The sidewalk presented an unexpected proving ground: a strip of bright yellow tactile paving, laid before the crossing in an orderly grid of raised circular studs. Hours of stationary night duty had left my joints stiff. Lowering my stance at the edge of the textured tile, I accelerated forward into a brisk run. Leaping from one raised node to the next demanded exact timing; missing a crest meant slipping into the grooved troughs between them. I cleared five studs in rapid sequence, using the rubberized friction of each dome to pivot cleanly toward the curb. I landed in a balanced crouch on the final marker, my rhythm unbroken.
