The Copper Crescent

I noticed a small copper cookie cutter shaped like a crescent moon resting flat beside the ceramic bread bin. Pausing to make sure my footing was steady on the pine counter, I reached out with both hands to lift the cool, curved metal. It felt sturdy, with one smooth rolled rim and one crisp edge. Standing it carefully upright between the slatted grooves of a wooden trivet, I tested its balance so it would not topple. Right beside the tea canister lay a stray, smooth pearl button. I gently nudged the tiny white disc into the hollow curve of the arch, where it caught the low amber nightlight like a quiet star tucked into the moon.
