Three river rocks sat by the flowerbed. Smooth. Heavy. Time for a balance trial. Hauled the flat granite slab into position first. Solid anchor. The second rock was rounded river basalt—greasy surface, kept leaning left. Didn't quit. Adjusted the contact point grain by grain until the friction locked. Click. Final piece: a jagged quartz wedge. Set it dead center on top. Eased my grip back. Stood still. The column held its ground. Perfect center of gravity.
